TREATMENT

Eyebrow Transplant

In shortEyebrow transplantation moves single-hair grafts from the back of your head into the brow, placed at a very flat angle and in the direction each part of the brow naturally grows. It is a small procedure in which the design decides almost everything: the shape is drawn and agreed with you before a single graft is taken.

The design

The drawing matters more than the technique

On the scalp, a graft placed slightly off-angle disappears among thousands of others. On a brow there are no thousands of others. Every graft is visible, so the shape, the angle and the direction of each one show.

That is why the procedure begins with a drawing rather than an instrument. The brow is shaped against your face — the position of the arch, where it begins and ends, how the head of the brow relates to the bridge of the nose — and agreed with you before anything is taken from the donor area. If you do not agree with the drawing, nothing proceeds.

  • The head of the brow grows nearly straight up. The body angles outward. The tail lies almost flat. Three directions in one small area, and each has to be followed.
  • Only single-hair grafts are used. A graft carrying two or three hairs comes up as a tuft and reads as artificial however well the angle is judged.
  • The angle is extremely flat — flatter than anywhere on the scalp. Brow hair lies against the skin rather than standing away from it.

Suitability

Who this is for, and who should wait

Brow loss has several causes and not all of them are answered by a transplant. The distinction is made at the examination, not from photographs alone.

Usually suitable

  • Loss from over-plucking, waxing or years of shaping
  • Gaps from a scar or a burn, once the tissue has settled
  • Naturally sparse brows, from the age of twenty
  • Thinning at the tail of the brow

Assess first

  • Alopecia areata — treat it first; surgery is not the first answer
  • Thyroid or hormonal causes, until they are established and managed
  • Under twenty: the growth pattern is not yet settled
  • Active skin disease in the brow area

Process

How the procedure runs

  1. 01Before you travel

    Photo assessment

Close-up photographs of the brow area from the front and both sides, and your basic medical history. You receive the plan and an itemised written quotation before anything is booked.

  2. 02Day 1

    Examination and drawing

The tissue is assessed and the shape is drawn on your face and agreed with you. The graft count follows from the shape rather than the other way round.

  3. 03Day 2 · morning

    Extraction

Single-hair grafts are taken with a 0.6 mm punch from the back of the head and behind the ears. Only the small area being harvested is trimmed — no head shave.

  4. 04Day 2 · midday

    Placement

Grafts are placed one at a time at a very flat angle, following the direction of each part of the brow. This is the slow part of the day and it is where the result is decided.

  5. 05Day 3

    First wash and departure

The first wash is demonstrated, you are given written aftercare, then the transfer to the airport.

Free assessment

How many grafts would your brows need?

It depends entirely on the shape and on what is growing there now, which is why no honest number can be given before the assessment. Send close-up photographs and you will receive the plan, an estimated graft count and an itemised written quotation.

Afterwards

What to expect, and what to keep doing

What happens when
PeriodWhat happens
Days 1–3Swelling and redness. The first wash is done with you before you fly home.
Days 4–10Crusts form and come away with the prescribed washing routine. Do not pick them off.
Weeks 2–8The transplanted hairs shed. This is expected. The follicle stays; the shaft is what falls out.
Months 3–4New growth starts, fine and uneven at first.
Months 6–9Density builds and the result starts to read as yours.
Months 12–18The final result. Judging it before month twelve is judging it too early.

Transplanted brow hair keeps its origin

The grafts come from your scalp, and they keep the properties of the place they came from. That means they grow at scalp speed rather than brow speed, so they need trimming — regularly, for as long as you have them. This is not a complication; it is how the procedure works, and it is worth knowing before rather than after.

Costs are on the cost page. Related procedures: beard and moustache, and hair transplantation for the scalp.

Frequently asked questions

At what age can an eyebrow transplant be done?

From about twenty. Around that age the hormonal picture settles and physical development is complete; before it, the growth pattern is not yet fixed.

Will I have to shave my head?

No. Only the small donor area being harvested is trimmed, at the back of the head or behind the ears, where it is covered by surrounding hair.

Does transplanted eyebrow hair need trimming?

Yes, and regularly. The grafts come from your scalp and keep its growth rate, so they grow longer than brow hair does. This is inherent to the procedure rather than a complication.

Can it be done on a scar or a burn?

Often, but the tissue is assessed first and the plan is adjusted to it. Skipping that step is how grafts fail to take. Send a close-up of the area with your photographs.

How many grafts will I need?

It follows from the shape drawn for your face and from what is growing there now. A number given before the assessment tells you nothing useful.

Why only single-hair grafts?

Brow hair grows as individual hairs. A graft carrying two or three comes up as a small tuft, which reads as artificial even when the angle is correct. Grafts are sorted under magnification for this reason.

My brows fell out from alopecia. Can I have this?

Treatment first. What responds to treatment should not be solved with an operation. If the result does not hold, a transplant comes into consideration then.

Will the shape look like the drawing?

The drawing is the plan and it is agreed with you before anything is taken. The final appearance settles as the hair grows in over 12–18 months; judging it earlier is judging it too early.
